Charles Claypoole

Charles Claypoole is a lawyer in the London office of the global law firm Latham & Watkins.

Charles advises both sovereign States and private clients on a wide range of contentious and non-contentious public international law and related legal issues, including: the protection of international investments under bilateral and multilateral investment treaties; State sovereignty over natural resources; land and maritime boundary issues; the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS); UN, EU and domestic trade sanctions regimes; sovereign immunity; international humanitarian and human rights law.

Charles has extensive experience in representing clients in proceedings before a variety of international judicial and arbitral bodies including the International Court of Justice, the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal, ICSID, ICC, LCIA and ad hoc arbitral tribunals. Charles also advises and represents clients in all aspects of international commercial arbitration and related judicial proceedings.

Charles lectures on public international law at Kings College London and the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton and frequently speaks at industry and academic conferences on issues related to public international law.  He is closely involved with the British Mongolian business community and spoke on “Investment in Mongolia: some aspects of public international law” at the seminar on the future of Mongolia organized by the Mongolian British Chamber of Commerce in July 2009.
